The Growth of Ceolas
Ceolas started out in September of 1994, in conjunction with the launch of the
rec.music.celtic newsgroup by James Chokey of Stanford and others. It started
as an FTP-only archive, adding a Web server in April of 1995. The graphs below
follow the number of users and number of downloads from the beginning to March
1996. How high will those graphs go? Nobody knows...
Number of Ceolas users per month
Number of files downloaded per month
Notes
- The number of users reported is the number of unique client computers which accessed
Ceolas during the month. Since many clients are used by many people (like aol.com!), this is an underestimate of the true figure.
- The number of Web files downloaded includes images and backgrounds. In Mar '96, when
Ceolas had become quite graphical, almost 48% of the requests were for images (on many
servers, one page can often have up to 10 graphical elements, making the number of
'hits' over ten times the number of documents downloaded).
- In summary, Ceolas has grown approximately 300% in the past year to the point we now supply information to
over 1,000 people per day, who on average download five ducuments from the archive.
